Top of the Premier League at the halfway stage of the season and three points clear of their title rivals, Chelsea have been the standout team of the season so far.

After a brilliant summer in which they managed to bring in Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa and sell Davids Luiz for £50million, the Blues squad doesn't look particularly weak in any one area, bar maybe a shortage of defenders.

Jose Mourinho's team have already played at Old Trafford, the Etihad, and Anfield, as well as St Mary's, leaving a trip to the Emirates as, arguably, the toughest fixture they still have to play. The match at home to Manchester City on 31 January could go a long way to settling the title race.

Chelsea are always active in the transfer windows and expect to be fighting for trophies on all four fronts - they will be keeping their cheque book open should a top target or someone who can add depth to their squad arise.

What they need: The only weakness in a brilliant squad is a lack of options in defence, should one or two get injured. Mourinho only has six senior defenders in his squad and one of those, Kurt Zouma, is 20. A serious injury to John Terry, Gary Cahill or Branislav Ivanovic would be troublesome.

If Nemanja Matic or Cesc Fabregas was out for any length of time it would spell trouble, though Ramires is now back to full fitness and better cover than John Obi Mikel.

Some of the recent rumours are a little outlandish - Gareth Bale for example - however, Chelsea being Chelsea, they will always put themselves in the frame for top talent should it become available.

Top targets: Paul Pogba (Juventus), Andrej Kramaric (Rijeka), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid).

On the way out? Mohamed Salah, Petr Cech.
