David Cameron and his wife Samantha have begun their summer holiday with a visit to a Portuguese fish market.

The couple strolled around the stalls at the market at Aljezur on the Algarve before settling on some squid for their supper.

The Prime Minister - who has been criticised in the past for his choice of holiday wear - picked a short-sleeved blue shirt, khaki shorts and a pair of loafers (worn without socks) for the visit.

His wife chose a sleeveless green dress.

The Camerons, who arrived in Portugal yesterday with their three children, are spending just under two weeks in the area.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg faced criticism earlier this month after it emerged that both he and the Prime Minister would be abroad on holiday at the same time - for the second year in a row.

The Liberal Democrat leader was due to fly to Spain with his family.

And speaking on his weekly LBC Radio programme on July 11, he said: "We're pragmatic about these things to make sure that, as much as possible, we don't go away at the same time but there's not always a perfect match.

"And I think both the Prime Minister and I have a lot of faith in other senior members of the Government: Theresa May, William Hague and others, who for those periods of time - and they're usually relatively brief - where neither he nor I are in the country either because of holidays or because we're both away on official business; that they can also hold the fort."

Labour leader Ed Miliband and his family are reported to be holidaying in France.
