The Sunderland player has been suspended by his club pending a police investigation
Sunderland player Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl, following a police raid on his mansion, says the BBC.
Sunderland have announced the midfielder has been suspended by the club pending the outcome of a police investigation. A statement from the Premier League club said: "Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time."
Reports in The Sun claim three police cars arrived at his £1.85m property at around 9:15am this morning.
A neighbour was quoted by the same publication as saying: "You could tell they were police officers, they were all dressed in black.
"I haven’t seen the player all day. I just assumed there had been a burglary."
The BBC say Police have confirmed a man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl aged under 16. The corporation have since named the player as Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson.
27-year-old Johnson is a regular in the Sunderland team and has also played for Manchester City and Middlesbrough. He has also represented England 12 times.
