ARSENAL

VERDICT: Got the extra defender that was so desperately needed but failed to bring in a holding midfielder, although the emergence of Francis Coquelin is encouraging. Arsene Wenger allowed three forwards to leave and Arsenal now appear quite light in that department. 7/10

ASTON VILLA

Ins: Carles Gil (Valencia, undisclosed), Scott Sinclair (Manchester City, loan)

Outs: Darren Bent (Derby, loan), Gary Gardner (Nottingham Forest, loan), Daniel Johnson (Preston, undisclosed), Chris Herd (Wigan, loan), Jordan Graham (Wolves, undisclosed), Callum Robinson (Preston, loan)

VERDICT: A lot of investment is needed to get this squad where fans expect it to be. Gil and Sinclair look like good moves but it is not nearly enough. 4/10

BURNLEY

Ins: Michael Keane (Manchester United, undisclosed)

Outs: Alex Cisak (Leyton Orient, loan)

VERDICT: Sean Dyche was obviously happy enough with his squad going into the final months of the season. Keeping Danny Ings until the summer was the biggest move. 7/10

CHELSEA

Ins: Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina, undisclosed)

Outs: Fernando Torres (AC Milan, undisclosed), Marko Marin (Anderlecht, loan), Mark Schwarzer (Leicester, free), Todd Kane (Nottingham Forest, loan), Nathaniel Chalobah (Reading, loan), Tomas Kalas (Middlesbrough, loan), John Swift (Swindon, loan), Andre Schurrle (Wollfsburg, undisclosed), Lewis Baker (Sheff Wed, loan), Alex Kiwomya (Barnsley, loan), Mohamed Salah (Fiorentina, loan), Stipe Perica (Udinese, loan), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton, undisclosed)

VERDICT: Recouped nearly £40m for Ryan Bertrand and Andre Schurrle, who were not first-team players, and got Fernando Torres off the books once and for all. If Cuadrado can hit the ground running Cheslea will win the title. 8/10

CRYSTAL PALACE

VERDICT: Alan Pardew's arrival was the best bit of business the Eagles did in January. No Premier League team was busier, but it remains to be seen which of these eight players do the job. 8/10

EVERTON

Ins: Aaron Lennon (Tottenham, loan)

Outs: Samuel Eto'o (Sampdoria, undisclosed), Chris Long (Brentford, loan), Hallam Hope (Bury, undisclosed), Matthew Kennedy (Cardiff, undisclosed), Conor McAleny (Cardiff, loan), Conor Grant (Motherwell, loan)

VERDICT: Toffees fans will have been wanting more given their poor first half of the season. Should Lennon get back to his best he will be an excellent addition. 6/10

HULL

Ins: Dame N'Doye (Lokomotiv Moscow, undisclosed)

Outs: Tom Ince (Derby, loan), Greg Luer (Port Vale, loan)

VERDICT: A striker was desperately needed for goal-shy Hull and they got one. He isn't the biggest name but has decent pedigree in Russia. 5/10

LEICESTER

Ins: Mark Schwarzer (Chelsea, free), Andrej Kramaric (Rijeka, undisclosed), Robert Huth (Stoke, loan)

Outs: Tom Hopper (Scunthorpe, loan extension), Jack Barmby (Rotherham, loan), Callum Elder (Mansfield, loan), Adam Dawson (Bristol Rovers, loan)

VERDICT: Schwarzer is an improvement over No 2 Ben Hamer and Robert Huth should shore up a leaky defence but Leicester's survival depends on record signing Kramaric. Chelsea were close to a deal for the Croatian and he needs to show why. 8/10

LIVERPOOL

Ins:

Outs: Suso (AC Milan, undisclosed), Oussama Assaidi (Al Ahli Club, undisclosed), Connor Randall (Shrewsbury, loan), Kevin Stewart (Cheltenham, loan), Lloyd Jones (Cheltenham, loan), Jack Dunn (Cheltenham, loan), Sheyi Ojo (Wigan, loan)

VERDICT: Steven Gerrard announcing he will be leaving the club came as a huge blow to Reds fans. Liverpool's improvement in recent weeks probably stopped Brendan Rodgers from making a move and the jury is out about the wisdom of that. 5/10

MANCHESTER CITY

Ins: Wilfried Bony (Swansea, initial £25m)

Outs: Matija Nastasic (Schalke, loan), Scott Sinclair (Aston Villa, loan), Devante Cole (MK Dons, loan), George Evans (Scunthorpe, loan), Sinan Bytyqi (SC Cambuur, loan), Jordy Hiwula (Walsall, loan)

VERDICT: A £25m move for someone that will be second-choice behind Sergio Aguero seems a bit excessive. 5/10

MANCHESTER UNITED

Ins: Victor Valdes (free agent), Sadiq El Fitouri (Salford City, undisclosed), Andy Kellett (Bolton, loan)

Outs: Michael Keane (Burnley, undisclosed), Will Keane (Sheff Wed, loan), Ben Amos (Bolton, loan), Joe Rothwell (Blackpool, loan), Marnick Vermijl (Sheff Wed, undisclosed), Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace, undisclosed), Ben Pearson (Barnsley, loan), Sam Johnstone (Preston, loan), Jesse Lingard (Derby, loan), Saidy Janko (Bolton, loan), Darren Fletcher (West Brom, free transfer)

VERDICT: After the excitement of the summer this will seem like a complete let-down. A top class centre-back was desperately needed and though many big names were linked, unattached Valdes was the only arrival who will challenge for the first-team. 3/10

NEWCASTLE

Outs: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (Roma, £5.5m), Hatem Ben Arfa (released), Davide Santon (Inter Milan, loan), Kevin Mbabu (Rangers, loan), Haris Vuckic (Rangers, loan), Remie Streete (Rangers, loan), Shane Ferguson (Rangers, loan), Gael Bigirimana (Rangers, loan)

VERDICT: Sending five players to another club part-owned by the same person shouldn't be allowed. Pardew left, Carver was promoted and talented players were let go. Could be disastrous. 3/10

QUEENS PARK RANGERS

Ins: Mauro Zarate (West Ham, loan), Ryan Manning (Galway, compensation)

Outs: Jordon Mutch (Crystal Palace, undisclosed), Max Ehmer (Gillingham, loan extension), Bruno Andrade (Stevenage, loan)

VERDICT: It appears that the lack of new signings could be the reason that Harry Redknapp resigned from the club, despite giving knee surgery as a reason. Emmanuel Adebayor and Matt Jarvis were both linked with a deadline day move. Starting to look like another doomed campaign. 2/10

SOUTHAMPTON

Ins: Eljero Elia (Werder Bremen, loan), Filip Djuricic (Benfica, loan), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea, undisclosed)

Outs: Jack Cork (Swansea, £3m), Jos Hooiveld (Millwall, loan)

VERDICT: Elia has already made an impact, Djuricic has great pedigree and Bertrand has been brilliant for Ronald Koeman this season (even though the reported £10m might be a bit hefty). Schneiderlin will remain until the end of the season at least as well, which is huge. 8/10

STOKE

Ins: Philipp Wollscheid (Bayer Leverkusen, loan)

Outs: Maurice Edu (Philadelphia Union, undisclosed), Ryan Shotton (Derby, undisclosed), Robert Huth (Leicester, loan), George Waring (Barnsley, loan)

VERDICT: With Bojan going down with a season-ending injury another attacking player might have been an option but never materialised. Wollscheid is an improvement over Huth. 6/10

SUNDERLAND

Ins: Jermain Defoe (Toronto, undisclosed)

Outs: Jozy Altidore (Toronto, undisclosed), Mikael Mandron (Shrewsbury, loan), Charis Mavrias (Panathinaikos, loan), Scott Harrison (Hartlepool, undisclosed), Cabral (released)

VERDICT: Swapping Defoe for Altidore could prove to be one of the great January moves. More was perhaps needed but Poyet now has a true goalscorer at his disposal. 8/10

SWANSEA

Ins: Kyle Naughton (Tottenham, £5m), Jack Cork (Southampton, £3m), Nelson Oliveira (Benfica, loan), Matt Grimes (Exeter, undisclosed)

Outs: Wilfried Bony (Manchester City, initial £25m), Rory Donnelly (Tranmere, loan), Ryan Hedges (Leyton Orient, loan), Liam Shephard (Yeovil, loan), Jazz Richards (Fulham, loan)

VERDICT: Swansea fans will be hoping that Garry Monk is saving that Bony money for the summer. Gomis should be able to do the job for now but at 29 he is not really a long-term replacement. Naughton seems overpriced but Cork was a good move. 6/10

TOTTENHAM

Ins: Dele Alli (MK Dons, undisclosed)

Outs: Kyle Naughton (Swansea, £5m) Milos Veljkovic (Charlton, loan), Dominic Ball (Cambridge, loan), Kenneth McEvoy (Colchester, loan), Grant Hall (Blackpool, loan), Nathan Oduwa (Luton, loan), Jordan Archer (Millwall, loan), Emmanuel Sonupe (St Mirren, loan), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (released), Aaron Lennon (Everton, loan), Dele Alli (MK Dons, loan)

VERDICT: Naughton was not good enough for Spurs and Lennon and Assou-Ekotto were both on the fringes of the squad. Alli is one for the long-term and will decide how good this month really was. 7/10

WEST BROM

Ins: Callum McManaman (Wigan, £4.75million), Darren Fletcher (Man Utd, free transfer)

Outs: Donervon Daniels (Aberdeen, loan), Bradley Garmston (Gillingham, loan), Luke Daniels (Scunthorpe, undisclosed)

VERDICT: Fletcher will bring years of know-how to a team finding a new identity under Pulis. Berahino staying at The Hawthorns was huge, but Pulis definitely wanted to do more business. 6/10

WEST HAM

Ins: Doneil Henry (Apollon Limassol, undisclosed)

Outs: Mauro Zarate (QPR, loan), Ricardo Vaz Te (released), Sean Maguire (Accrington, loan), Jamie Harney (Colchester, free), Paul McCallum (Portsmouth, loan), Blair Turgott (released), Matthias Fanimo (released)

VERDICT: Winston Reid stayed but Emmanuel Adebayor was not allowed to move from north to east London. The son of owner David Sullivan tweeted that eight deals fell through on deadline day, if that is anywhere close to true Big Sam will be fuming. West Ham needed reinforcements to continue their push. 4/10
