An Amber Alert — the emergency response system for missing persons — has been issued for a 9-year-old girl last seen Friday afternoon who was allegedly kidnapped by her uncle.

Benbrook police have issued an arrest warrant for Jessie Nicholas Williams, 24, in connection with the kidnapping of his niece Caitlyn Elizabeth Williams in Texas. Authorities believe the child is in immediate danger, NBC reported.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed two sightings of Mr Williams and the young girl over the weekend. They were seen at a hotel and hair salon — giving authorities reason to believe the girl’s appearance had been altered.

"She was described as having long wavy brown hair, we have reason to believe that her hair may have been cut short to alter her appearance," said Benbrook Police Officer Sandy Eubanks.

"Because the other family members can't contact [Mr Williams], obviously that elevates the level of concern we have for the child," he said.

Police said they have recovered a rental car the two were traveling in and the FBI has since joined the investigation.

"The investigators are talking with the parents, they're talking with relatives, they're talking with friends, they've been out canvassing neighbors, fliers have been printed up," Mr Eubanks said. "We hope that maybe there's some information out there that someone has that they don't know that's important that the investigators may turn up."
