Ed Sheeran set for 'recurring role' in new TV series by Sons of Anarchy creator

After dropping plenty of hints about wanting a cameo role in Game of Thrones, Ed Sheeran has reportedly landed himself a proper TV role in upcoming drama The Bastard Executioner.

The singer-songwriter is said to be set for an appearance in the new American series, which is being billed as a "blood-soaked medieval epic" about the story of a 14th Century warrior during King Edward’s reign.

Sheeran, who would be performing alongside British True Blood actor Stephen Moyer and Katy Sagal, mentioned the role in an interview with The Sun last week, where he said he hoped fans would be surprised by the move.

"It’s gruesome and it’s going to be fine because my friend wrote it," he said. "I feel like people would expect me to be in a romcom or something, so I wanted to be in something people don’t expect me to."

Series creator Kurt Sutter, who created the crime drama Sons of Anarchy, tweeted the news on 27 July. The show's premiere date has yet to be announced.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sheeran and Sutter teamed up after the musician said he was a fan of the show, recording a version of Foy Vance's "Make It Rain" for the penultimate episode.

Sheeran seems keen to branch into television. Reports of his role in The Bastard Executioner follow a cameo appearance in Channel 5 soap Home and Away during his Australia tour. He also appeared in popular children’s TV show Sesame Street.
