It probably already seems like a long time since International Women’s Day for the residents of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where a house has been put up for sale in an offer that includes a garage, a spacious back garden – and a free wife.

The unconventional offer was the idea of the estate agent for the IDR999 million (£50,000) property, and 40-year-old home owner Wina Lia told local media she was happy to go along with it.

Wina has now done a number of TV interviews since news of the sale took off on social media, and she told news website Kompas.com that she agreed to it because she was “looking for a husband anyway”.

The single-storey house, built on slightly over a sixth of an acre and featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, granite flooring and even a fish pond, was listed on property website Ruhahdijual.com with the promotion: “Buy at the asking price and take the owner as your wife (terms and conditions apply)”.

“I don’t blame Dian as I did agree with the tagline,” the single mother said. “Every time I fall in love, it fails – it’s happened twice now. My wish is to sell this house, but it would be great if I also meet my soulmate.”

Dian Purna Dirgantara, the male estate agent who came up with the plan, defended it on the grounds that a buyer wouldn’t necessarily have to marry Wina.

“Since yesterday morning there are continuous calls, I don’t count how many, there must be dozens or even hundreds,” he told Time Magazine.

“[But] if someone just wants the house, they can have that,” he said.
