Sue Perkins found herself at the receiving end of online abuse following bookies odds she was in poll position to replace Jeremy Clarkson as the new presenter of Top Gear.

The comedian, who presents The Great British Bake Off, was among several household names being touted for the position following the former host’s sacking in March.

Perkins denied the speculation, tweeting to one fan’s question as to whether or not she would be taking on the role.

She wrote: “A. It is obviously IS against me and B. I am not. So rest assured!”

But that hasn’t appeared to have ebbed the flow of wrath from angry Top Gear fans, who she claims have bombarded her with death threats.

Clarkson was let go by the BBC after an internal inquiry found him guilty of punching a show producer in a row over catering arrangements.

He is expected to continue a live tour with his former Top Gear co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May this year.
