The film adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed video game series has released its first image of lead Michael Fassbender in costume.

Fans of the series might well be reminded of Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed II visually, but he is actually playing Callum Lynch in the movie, a new character written for the film presumably based on protagonist Desmond Miles.

Assassin’s Creed will follow a similar plot to the games, with the unlocking of his genetic code allowing Lynch to relive the memories of his ancestors, putting time travel to good use by perching on tall buildings, stabbing people from a great height and leaping into bales of hay.

Lynch will inhabit an assassin from his ancestry called Aguilar, who lived in Spain in the 15th century, and by altering events in this time period hopefully crush the Knights Templar in the film’s present day.

Assassin’s Creed will also feature Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed and be directed by Macbeth’s Justin Jurzel.

It is not due to hit cinemas until 21 December, 2016.
