Arsenal fans have taken reports that Lionel Messi wants to a move to the Emirates with a pinch of salt, with one fan comically asking 599,999 other supporters to help pay the Barceloa maestro’s wages.
The Daily Star ran a report on Monday claiming that Messi is keen on moving to Arsenal providing they can cough up what would be a world record wage of £600,000-a-week. Given the frugal spenders that are Arsenal, fans clearly didn’t buy into this and took to Twitter to voice their humour at reading such a transfer rumour.
Messi has been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp in the past, with both Manchester City and Chelsea toured as possible destinations should the unthinkable happen and Barcelona decide to sell the four-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The 28-year-old Argentina international would cost in the region of £200m should anyone wish to snap him up on a transfer, and on wages of £600,000-a-week, the Gunners would have to shell out nearly £1bn extra to pay him.
But one Arsenal fan has come up with a unique way to bay for Messi’s wages. Twitter user @matt_clarky has offered to set-up a £1 direct debit each week to Messi, and has called on his fellow Gunners to do the same.

He seems to fit the bill - a young goalscorer with serious potential, able of challenging Giroud, Walcott and Welbeck for the starting berth. The only fall-down point, however, would be his price- anyone seeking his signature would have to stump up at least £30m.

Rabiot has been booed by Parisian fans recently after requesting a loan switch away from the club, with several Premier League clubs known to be interested, but PSG would prefer to sell the want-away star. A fee in the region of £15m should be enough to persuade the Ligue 1 outfit to sell as Wenger considers his next move.

His partnership with Ever Banega and Steven N’Zonzi is one of the most cohesive in Europe and his no-nonsense defensive capabilities would add some much-needed grit to the Gunners’ midfield in the absence of Coquelin. However his price tag sits at a handsome £32m, having re-signed with Sevilla in November.

He is only 23 and already a top-class centre forward, as Manchester City found out in September- but it seems more and more likely that Los Galacticos will activate their £21m release clause to bring Morata back to Madrid as long as Karim Benzema’s future remains up in the air.

He signed a new deal at the French club which may mean he stays and will definitely put up his price.

However, after joining the Serie A champions in the summer, he has failed to make a single appearance in the league and his sole outing this season came in an 89th-minute substitute appearance in the Champions League. Having been touted as an Italian international in the making, Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked with the 21-year-old along with Napoli.

Depending on the outcome, Benzema could see on the move after seven seasons with the Spanish side, and Arsenal are known to be big fans of Benzema’s talents on the field, having seen a move for him in the summer rejected.

While Higuain’s talents remain undoubted, Napoli have suffered a drop in their reputation across Europe having failed to reach the Champions League this season. Head coach Rafa Benitez moved on in the summer and expectation is that Higuain will follow him out of the exit soon enough, although Chelsea’s interest in the Argentina international will be cause for concern for Arsenal fans.

In the 23-year-old Carvalho, Arsenal could add one of the highest rated midfielders yet to picked up by one of Europe’s biggest teams, and while he has a release clause of £37m in his contract, Arsenal have shown recently that they will spend if the player fits.

But he was not the only one to read the reports with a slight disbelief. Even well-known Arsenal fan Piers Morgan chipped in with his two-pence.
All that’s left now is for Messi to sign for Arsenal, secure a Premier League and Champions League double and the Gunners live happily ever after, right?
