Tesco has become the latest supermarket to join the savoury snack war across British supermarkets by launching its new Finest crisp flavour – Prosecco and Elderberry.

Part of Tesco’s Finest range, the 150g bag has been launched in time for the Christmas season.

Retailing at £1.59, the description on the packet says: "Sweet, delicately fragrant elderberry with the festive fizz of Prosecco."

But social media users were unimpressed with the new creative snack.

A Twitter user calling themselves Illustrated Lawyer posted a picture alongside the caption: “Go home, Tesco. You’re drunk,”

One reply read: "That's the single most middle class s*** I've ever seen."

Another user, Kathleen, asked Tesco to “stop the madness” on Instagram

Marks & Spencer made headlines earlier this year by launching their unusually flavoured Winter Berries and Prosecco crisps complete with pink glitter sprinkles.

Other imaginative flavours recently seen on British supermarkets' shelves are Sage and Scrumpy Cider from Marks & Spencer and Tesco’s Brie & Cranberry, and Goat’s Cheese and Sticky Chilli Jam. While Kettle Chips issued a new soy, ginger, chilli and honey this autumn.
