Family adventure holidays for 2016: From jungle jollies to hiking in the Himalayas

British Airways is returning to Costa Rica next May, with flights from Gatwick to San José, and The Ultimate Travel Company (020 3553 9218; theultimatetravelcompany.co.uk) has put together a nine-day jungle adventure from £6,430 for a family of four (two adults and two children under 12) including BA flights, transfers, accommodation and some meals. Highlights include three nights at the Parador Resort in Manuel Antonio National Park.

There's a buzz in the Galapagos Islands following the recent discovery of a new sub-species of giant tortoise on Santa Cruz. The Family Adventure Company (0845 004 5023; familyadventurecompany.co.uk) has a new eight-day trip to three different islands, from £2,790 per adult and £2,511 per child, including flights from London, internal flights, speedboat transfers, national park fees, activities, accommodation and meals.

The US National Park Service turns 100 in August 2016. To experience the great outdoors in style, Exsus (020 7337 9010; exsus.com) has a 14-day self-drive adventure to Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Arches National Parks from £3,215 per person, with return flights from Heathrow to Denver, car rental and accommodation.

For something more off-the-beaten-track, Selective Asia (01273 670 001; selectiveasia.com) is offering a new 13-day Cambodia Adventure for families with children aged 12-plus. You'll kayak around floating villages and fly in a microlight over the Angkor temples. The privately guided tour costs from £1,801 per person, excluding international flights.

Other new family adventure ideas in Asia include a week trekking in the Indian Himalaya region of Ladakh. Shakti Himalaya (020 3151 5177; shaktihimalaya.com) has developed day hikes suitable for the whole family, as well as a programme of activities for children. The trip costs from around £3,135 per person based on a family of four, including full-board accommodation, all activities and permits and an English-speaking guide. Flights are extra.

Turkey offers value for money. Activities Abroad (01670 789 991; activitiesabroad.com) has a new eight-day trip based in Kas on the Turquoise Coast for £875 per adult and £825 per child (age eight-11), including flights from London, transfers, hotel accommodation, most meals, and activities ranging from mountain biking and boat trips to hiking and sea kayaking.
