England put on one of their best performances in months as they opened their qualification campaign for the 2016 European Championship with a fine 2-0 victory in Switzerland on Monday.

Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck scored twice in the second half to secure the points as captain Wayne Rooney impressed and Raheem Sterling, Gary Cahill and Joe Hart also shone.

England began with verve and confidence and withheld renewed pressure from the hosts after the break to wrap up the points.

The performance was much improved from last Wednesday’s dull friendly victory over Norway and offers encouragement ahead of a fortuitous group, which also includes San Marino, Slovenia, Estonia and Lithuania and after a disappointing summer which saw England exit the World Cup in the group stages for the first time since 1958.

But which player performed best – check out our ratings below.

Onwards and upwards for Roy Hodgson's men.
