The Royal Mail is to implement a pilot scheme of Sunday deliveries and office openings this weekend with customers in London and surrounding towns set to receive packages through their doors.

Customers will be able to collect parcels at around 100 offices on a Sunday from this weekend, while parcel deliveries will be made within the M25 area.

Royal Mail will open offices for four hours from noon on a Sunday as the postal firm aims to make it easier for shoppers who are not at home during the week to collect their online purchases.

Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “We are continuing to be more customer-responsive and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.

"I am delighted to pilot Sunday afternoon opening at around 100 of our delivery offices across the UK with the highest parcel volumes, and Sunday deliveries to addresses within the M25 motorway."

The initiative is the latest in a series of moves by Royal Mail to improve its customer service amid increasing competition from rivals, including TNT.

Earlier this year, Royal Mail began opening its distribution network later on a Saturday and on Sundays. This has enabled larger online retailers to hand items ordered by shoppers on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday to Royal Mail for delivery on a Monday.

Royal Mail has also rolled out its Delivery to Neighbour initiative across the UK, allowing customers not at home when delivery is attempted can also arrange a free redelivery to their home or a neighbour.
