Bystanders near the Sydney siege have been criticised as “insensitive” and “sick” for taking selfies on the site where around 15 people have been taken hostage inside a café today by an alleged gunman.
Tourists and shoppers took photos of themselves outside the Lindt Chocolate Café on Martin Place while armed police stood guard outside the premises.
The suspected Islamist gunman took around 15 people hostage since 9.45am local time and has reportedly told police that he has planted two bombs planted in the café and a further two around the financial district, according to Channel Ten Australian TV network.
While the hostages have clearly been seen through the window being made to hold up a black-and-white flag in the terrifying situation, people outside took it upon themselves to take photos of them smiling and laughing.

People on social media condemned the actions and said that it lacked respect for those inside the café who are fearing for their lives.
The Royal Opera House has been evacuated as well as the US embassy as the perpetrator claimed he has bombs planted in the café and several locations in the city.
