Barcelona could adopt horizontal stripes on their home kit for the first time in the club's 115-year history, according to reports in Spain.

Catalan newspaper Diario Sport have revealed that an inside source at the club claims president Josep Maria Bartomeu has already approved the design, after meeting with sports manufacturing giants Nike at a secret meeting at the Nou Camp on Monday.

Running the headline 'Revolution in the new shirt', the report states: "It is an important development because throughout history [the stripes] had been vertical, a line diagonally from one colour or even, on occasion, a single horizontal strip but no time were four bars horizontally...

"The company that equips FC Barcelona needed an innovative design because sales are down when the design is very similar to the previous year."

The back of the shirt will feature a Catalan flag, while the shorts are expected to be a crimson colour rather than the more traditional blue.
