The Ghostbusters reboot has found its new spectre-capturing team, with director Paul Feig confirming on Twitter that Bridesmaid actresses Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, and Saturday Night Live comedians Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones will star.

The quartet take over from the original 80s team of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis, with the reboot getting a release date of 22 July, 2016.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, with Feig later tweeting out a picture of the four actresses as confirmation.

The actresses have been linked with the project for some time, with Murray previously saying he thought the idea of a female team was "swell".

Fans seem to be happy with the choices, with one Twitter user writing: "Notably, if you were casting a new Ghostbusters movie without any regard for gender, you couldn't get much funnier than those four humans."

McKinnon last year won an Emmy for her work, and recently gave a very well-received parody of Justin Bieber's Calvin Klein shoot on SNL.

According to THR, the film is eying a summer shoot in New York.

It has been gestating for some time. Original director Ivan Reitman was on board as were Aykroyd and Ramis, but Murray did not seem keen to return to the franchise. Reitman later dropped out following Ramis' death, leaving Bridesmaids director Feig to step in.
