According to the Directors Guild of America, nearly every top film of the last 80 years has been directed by a man.

In their 80 best-directed films of the last 80 years, the film-makers’ union featured only one film directed by a woman: 2009’s Oscar-winner The Hurt Locker by Kathryn Bigelow. She also happens to be the one and only female who has ever won an Oscar for directing.

2,189 guild members voted, with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather topping the list, closely followed by Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane.

Filling out the top five were David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca. Coppola also holds the 6th and 7th spot with The Godfather: Part II and Apocalypse Now respectively.

“As in any poll of this nature, there are bound to be choices you disagree with,” the DGA said in an official statement. “And other films you would have included – that’s part of the fun. But we think you’ll find this list thought-provoking and a fitting tribute to the timeless work of our great directors.”
