If you have overspent over the festive season and need some bargain reds to match warming winter dishes, try these three value for money bottles…

From France...

Chateau Les Mauberts 2014

So long as you are not expecting a classically refined claret here, then this is a terrific little wine to buy by the half dozen at the discount. A typical Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend, with the latter’s smooth fruit flavours well to the fore, this has good structure and plenty of length on the finish. A great match for a midweek steak or a slow cooked lamb shank.

£6.00 tesco.com (normally £8.00; minimum 6 bottles purchase)

From Spain....

Glorioso Rioja 2012 Reserva

And glorious is the right word – a simply great value Rioja reserva from the very reputable Bodegas Palacio in the Rioja Alavesa region: a very modern, fruit driven style, with lots of very upfront, black fruit flavours, coupled with a little oak to give spice and plenty of chewy, juicy tannins. This would be perfect with a big baked pasta or an arroz con pollo.

£9.99 Lidl.co.uk; £9.00 (minimum 6 bottles purchase) tesco.com

From Australia....

The Black Pig, The Prize Shiraz 2012

If you are a fan of big, boisterous, full-blooded and fulsomely bodied Aussie reds, then you need look no further for an ideal bottle for dinner party or Sunday lunch. Rich and powerful black fruit flavours, a good dash of spice and a lip smacking punch on the palate make for a wine that needs big flavourful foods to match. Try with all roast red meats, but particularly daube of beef, Irish stew or other winter casseroles.

£11.99 virginwines.co.uk (normally £19.99; until 15 January)
