The 'event series' will begin production this summer

The X-Files is to return for an eleventh season, television network Fox has announced.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have both signed on to reprise their roles of Mulder and Scully for ten new episdes - four more than last year's revival.

Series creator Chris Carter will also return in an executive producing role for what fox is referring to an an 'event series.'

There's no current word on exact release date but production is scheduled to begin this summer with a launch expected during the 2017-18 television season.

Fox broadcasting Company's president David Madden said: “Chris' creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can't wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

Ahead of last year's revival, 2008 film I Want To Believe was the last foray into the universe of one of the biggest cult TV shows of all time.
