A cheering audience in North Korea - including leader Kim Jong-un - has watched a video showing a missile strike destroying a US city.

State television aired footage of a musical staged as part of the celebrations marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of North Korea’s founder, Kim II Sung, which included a huge military parade.

The show reached its climax with mocked-up footage merging a test-firing of a missile in February, which then in the video was joined by other missiles shooting across the Pacific and exploding as they hit the US.

Members of the military are seen in the footage which ends with a burning American flag superimposed over a cemetery.

“When the performance was over, all the performers and participants in the military parade broke into enthusiastic cheers of ‘hurrah!’,” the state-run KCNA news agency reported.

State TV footage showed leader Kim Jong-un smiling and waving in return.

“The Dear Supreme Leader waved back to them and congratulated the artistes on their successful performance,” KCNA said.

In recent months North Korea has claimed it has successfully tested a new type of medium to long-range ballistic missile, the Pukguksong-2, propelled by a solid-fuel engine.

During a military parade it displayed what appeared to be new intercontinental ballistic missiles and conducted a failed missile test a day later.
